Afrirampo "Kore Ga Mayaku Da" CD
Afrirampo are two 20 year old girls out
of the infamous Osaka scene who sing and play guitar/drums while
dressed in outrageous costumes. The influence of such close friends
as Boredoms and Acid Mother's Temple definitely shows on this eleven
track experiment in tempo, progression, and animalistic fury. Highly
recommended for fans of harsh, off-beat music. John Zorn's seal
of approval.
|
Bleach 03
"S/T" CD
A terrifically aggressive and talented female
three-piece. The 10 songs on their US debut range from soft ballads
to ska-like pop numbers, addictive as hell with a mass appeal. We
love this CD, highly recommended.
|
Electric Eel Shock
"Beat Me" CD
This 2005 release is the record that EES
were born to make. 12 tracks of pure rock and roll that will seem
perfect to some, over the top to others, but enjoyable by all. Produced
by Attie Bauw of Scorpions and Judas Priest fame. EES is much better
than either of those bands though. CD includes a fantastic cover
of Sabbath's "Iron Man". Highly recommended.
|
Electric Eel Shock
"Go USA!" CD
A re-worked US release of the Japan only
"Go America" album featuring extra tracks and two bonus
videos. EES play a unique brand of aggro-pop metal, which they perform
live with frantic precision and a naked drummer. This is the record
that contains all of the songs the threesome are known for including
"Suicide Rock 'N' Roll" and "Japanese Meets Chinese
In USA". One of our favorite bands.
|
Envy "Insomniac doze" CD
One of the leading bands in the Japanese
hardcore scene since they formed back in 1992. Envy play sprawling
Mono-esque rock songs that evolve into intensely emotional acts
of aggression. Their songs begin quiet and meditative, build to
loud guitar work with screaming vocals and then retreat the same
way they came. Mogwai and Isis are fans. Recommended.
|
eX-Girl "Endangered Species" CD
Words cannot describe the greatness that
is eX-Girl, but we'll try. Operatic vocals over genre-bending avant-noise
rock played by three girls who wear brightly-colored costumes and
hail from the distant world of Planet KeroKero. Fans include Mike
Patton and Jello Biafra. This is their 5th full-length and, like
their other albums, is produced by Hoppy Kamiyama, the Steve Albini
of Japan. Highest possible recommendation.
|

The Gimmies "Phonic Souls" CD
Motor City madness from Japan! In your face rock and roll
that would make the MC5 proud. In fact, this album was mastered
and co-produced by Michael Davis of the MC5. Seal of approval. For
fans of Guitar Wolf and Teengenerate.
|
Guitar Wolf Tribute V/A
"I Love Guitar Wolf Very Much" CD

of the best bands of today including Lightning Bolt, Jon Spencer
Blues Explosion, Snuff, J. Mascis and the Fog, Sonic Youth's Jim
O'Rourke and many others. Listen to your favorite GW songs in a
diverse array of styles. Highly recommended. Listen to Porch Ghouls'
"Fujiyama Attack" and Puffy Amiyumi's "Can-Nana Fever"
below.
|
Guitar Wolf
"Golden Black" CD (Best of)
26 tracks of some of the greatest Guitar
Wolf songs ever recorded. This anthology spans the band's entire
18 year career and includes rare, out of print, and previously unreleased
material. Some of the disc's hightlights include tracks off of the
long out-of-print Matador releases "Jet Generation" and
"Missile Me", the songs featured in Wild Zero. No one's
music collection is complete without this record, highest possible
recommendation.
|

Guitar Wolf "LoveRock" CD or LP
One of the greatest rock and roll bands
in history. No joke. Guitar Wolf play furious, high distortion,
stripped down rock and roll in its purest form imaginable. Clad
in matching black leather jackets and pants, Guitar Wolf, Bass Wolf,
and Drum Wolf have been the forerunners of "Jet Rock"
since they formed in 1987. You may have seen them fighting alien
zombies in Wild Zero (the DVD of which is for sale below). Loverock
is their eighth album and is 17 tracks in length. The LP is on orange
vinyl beneath a heart-shaped die-cut cover, very nice.
|
Guitar Wolf "UFO Romantics" CD
The seventh full length release from the coolest
band in the world featuring some of the most cleanly produced Guitar
Wolf songs you'll ever hear. 13 new songs about UFOs, alcohol and
rock 'n' roll. Enhanced CD features a music video for the title
track.
|

Guitar Wolf "R.R.E." CD
Guitar Wolf teach you Rock N Roll Etiquette
on their sixth full length. Sixteen tracks of high energy jet
rock and roll including one of their best songs yet, "God-Speed-You",
as well as a cover of The Cramps' "The Way I Walk".
The booklet includes some of the coolest photos of the band we've
ever seen.
|
Guitar Wolf in "Wild Zero" DVD
Guitar Wolf star in this Japanese rock 'n' roll zombie
horror classic. A must-see for fans of leather jackets, buckets
of blood, laser guitar picks, and romance! No cinematic genre is
left untouched as aliens invade the Earth unleashing a zombie virus

can defeat. Features performances of the GW classics "Jet Generation"
and "Roaring Blood". Widescreen, 98 minutes in length.

Limited Express (has gone?)
"Live at the 101 Bar" CD
A super cheap live album recorded on their
Samurai Koala tour throughout Australia in 2004. Here's a great
description of LE(hg?)'s sound: "Fugazi battling Astroboy inside
a giant strawberry coloured lava lamp". That pretty much sums
it up. Australia release comes in a plastic sleeve with an awesome
insert. Abstract pop at its best.
|
Limited Express (has gone?)
"Feeds You!" CD
Arising out of the infamous Kansai scene
that brought us the likes of the Boredoms, Kyoto-based LE(hg?) are
a young, three piece pop/rock/noise outfit with female vocals.
"Feeds You!", their debut release, matches the
speed and intensity of a Melt Banana record, but has a childlike
innocence that makes it compulsively listenable. An eclectic, powerful
album that has John Zorn's seal of approval.
|
Melt Banana
"MxBx1998/13000 Miles At Light Velocity" CD
The defining band of New Japanese Hardcore.
Sounds like a pleasant punch in the face. This CD is a virtual "best
of": 26 tracks recorded live during their 1998 US tour. Lots
of rare songs including a great cover of "Surfin' USA"
(listen below). The perfect introduction to the world of Japanese
noise.

Melt Banana
"Scratch Or Stitch" CD
After tons of requests we've finally decided to carry
Melt Banana's catalog. This is the first of many CDs that we'll
carry from Japan's queen-led kings of noise rock. 30 to 60 second
outbursts of noisy emotion that actually aren't nearly as serious
or urgent as they sound. 22 tracks clocking in at a 31 minute total,
our favorite MB album.
|
Mono & world's end girlfriend
"Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain" CD
Recorded right before their "You Are
There" album, this collaboration between Mono and Tokyo-based
electronic composer "world's end girlfriend" is a "five
part sojourn of neoclassical grace and luminescence that defies
lazy categorization (taken from their label's site)." Does
the period go before or after the quotation mark? You'll have plenty
of time to think about the answers to questions like that while
you listen to this meditative orchestral masterpiece.
|
Mono
"You Are There" CD
Our favorite CD of 2006. An absolutely brilliant
exploration into atmospheric guitar rock, "You Are There"
fully exploits every emotional corner of the realm of electric instrumentals
creating tender acoustic moments that seamlessly build to anxious
guitar play. Music to dream to, wake up to, and live to. Six amazing
songs ranging in length from 3 1/2 minutes to the epic 13 minute
closer "Moonlight", which may be the group's greatest
achievement thus far. Highest possible recommendation, especially
for fans of Godspeed You... and Mogwai. Produced by the great Steve
Albini. Its impossible to extract a sample of Mono's epic sound
since its so dependent on layering and pacing...but we tried.
|

Mono
"Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun
Shined" CD
The third album from Tokyo's explorers of
instrumental rock. Mono's current sound was soldified with this
release, which features 8 tracks of soaring crewscendos, titanic
sheets of distortion and dark melodies. Produced by Steve Albini,
Highly recommended.
|
Mono
"New York Soundtracks" LP
Remixes and reworkings of tracks from Mono's
"One Step More and You Die" album. Collaborators include
Calla, Aki Onda, Jackie-O Motherfucker and more. Limited edition
of 2,000, vinyl-only release.
|
Mono
"One Step More And You Die" CD
Mono's 2002 sophomore album that critics
will inevitably compare all of their future releases to. More sophisticated
than their previous release yet seemingly more raw and honest than
their subsequent releases...incredible in any case. Eight tracks
of beautiful brutality.
|

Mono
"Under the Pipal Tree" CD
Mono's debut full-length released courtesy
of John Zorn's Tzadik label. Mono are a young instrumental band
from Tokyo that combines elements of minimalism, psychedelia and
trance rock to create a masterful sound that rivals the best of
Sonic Youth's collages. Equally exciting and serene.
|
Red Bacteria Vacuum
"Roller Coaster" CD
Three cute young Japanese women who play
ruthless, non-stop punk rock. A great new band to come out of Japan,
this debut six song CDep is hopefully just the beginning for RBV.
Recommended for fans of Bikini Kill and
Lolita No.18.
|
The Rodeo Carburettor
"S/T" CD
High distortion rock-n-roll trio that will
set your soul on fire! Formed back in 2001, this is their fifth
full-length release and their first US release. More stylish than
punks, more punk than greasers...Guitar Wolf comparisons are inevitable.
|
The Spunks
"Yellow Fever Blues" CD
NYC's finest garage punk rockers are back
with their first Gearhead Records release. 12 tracks featuring live
staples like "Hey! Hey! Hay!" and "I Love Wok &
Roll" as well as some brand new songs including a cover of
The Clash's "Brand New Cadillac". Produced by Don Fury
(Youth of Today, Bouncing Souls). Highly recommended for fans of
Guitar Wolf, Teengenerate and Chinese food.
|
The Spunks "Born To Be Mild" CD
One of Tokyo no Radio's favorite bands.
The Spunks play loud, high energy ROCK AND ROLL with a sense of
humor and a firm grasp on what American listeners want to hear.
They're one of those bands whose CDs don't quite do their live
shows justice so the next time they're in your area be sure to
check them out (they're currently based out of NYC and tour quite
often). Recently signed to US label Gearhead Records.
|
The Spunks "Sex, Drink, Motor-rides" CD
Wok and roll!!! The Spunks play super
high energy kamikaze garage ROCK AND ROLL. This album contains
lots of their live staples including "Jet Blue" and
"Here Goes The Black Cat". For fans of Guitar Wolf and
the Jet Boys. Highly recommended!
|

Teengenerate "Get Action!" CD
The debut full-length from Tokyo's kings
of garage punk rock. A super lo-fi blast of mid-60s garage rock
combined with a modern power pop sound. Loud, fast, and incredibly
fun. 17 tracks including a cover of the Queers' "Kicked Out
Of The Webelos". Highly recommended.
TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK 1/16/08
|
Teengenerate "Savage" CD
A collection of eight songs from a previously
released 10" plus two unreleased tracks. More lo-fi, static
filled garage rock from one of Tokyo's best.
|
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant "Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter"
CD
Without a doubt one of the best CDs we
have for sale, we can't say enough good things about this band.
Hard-hitting garage rock that's uniquely melodic and sophisticated,
this Japanese combo must be heard to be understood. This is their
sixth full-length featuring 14 tracks. Fans of loud, stylish J-rock
need apply.
TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK 7/19/07
|
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant "Gear Blues" CD
For fans of the harder side of modern
J-rock, TMGE hit you harder than any weapon or large mammal on
the planet. "Gear Blues" is their critically acclaimed
fifth full-length. By the way, they got their name from a mispronunciation
of the Damned's "Machine Gun Etiquette" record. So cool.
TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK 11/29/06
|
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant "Collection" CD
Featuring early material, hit singles,
and rarities from their first five years as a band, this was the
album that introduced American audiences to the sophisticated
fury of Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. Fans of X-Japan styled J-rock
need apply so that they can hear the true sound of Japanese ROCK
AND ROLL.
|
Yoko Utsumi "S/T" CD
Yoko Utsumi has been a mainstay in the Japanese rock
scene since the early 80s. Think Shonen Knife via Guitar Wolf (I
think we compare too many bands to Guitar Wolf). This CD serves
as the perfect "greatest hits" compilation and features
members of Potshot and MU330 as the backing band.
