Tokyo no Radio launched on August 16, 2005 with
38 titles. Our goal is to put underground Japanese music in the
stereos of those who have limited or no access to CDs from one
of the most exciting countries in the world. Our inventory covers
all genres, from punk rock (Dudoos) to hip hop (Panda no Panda),
ska (Potshot) to garage (Teengenerate), country (Hot Shots) to
hard rock (TMGE), but all of our CDs have one thing in common:
they are, for the most part, seldom played on Japanese radio stations
and are virtually non-existant on American radio. There's nothing
like the feeling that comes with the discovery of a new band,
especially one that is unknown to you and your friends, so take
your time browsing our site. We're sure you'll find something
to suit your listening tastes.
Tokyo no Radio spun out of the online store on
the official website of Otaku
Unite!, a feature-length documentary on the history of Japanese
animation in the United States. Our inventory was getting too
large and being stuck in a corner of a web page that was primarily
created for a movie proved to be too limiting. Eric "Eiffel"
Bresler who does the ordering for TnR and was the director of
OU! also hosts a bi-weekly all-Japanese radio show in Philadelphia
called "Let
Me Crazy!" that you can listen to online at www.wkdu.org.
Our inventory is constantly changing with new
additions being added regularly. Our prices are quite reasonable,
some are just plain cheap. This is because,
first and foremost, we are fans of Japanese music. While profit
is a necessity, we are mainly interested in promoting the music
that we love and getting it into the hands of as many people as
possible. We're also 100% against downloading music especially
when it comes to bands such as the ones on this site who not only
deserve, but rely on the money that is generated through the sale
of their property. You will notice that sometimes CDs are
priced in the $20-30 range, which means that we had to import
the product from Japan where the average store cost for a CD is
around $30. A great deal of our product comes from American distributors
who are handling the domestic distribution of Japanese artists
thus we are able to keep our prices low in these cases. We plan
on eventually expanding to include select CDs from non-Japanese
bands that are either Japan-related or we just like a whole lot.
If you are in a band from Japan and would like to have your CDs
appear on Tokyo no Radio then please feel free to drop us an e-mail.
